Official: 3rd-grader stuck 19 schoolmates with needle
Friday, April 29, 2005 Posted: 12:46 PM EDT (1646 GMT)
PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania (AP) -- A third-grader stuck 19 schoolmates with her mother's diabetes blood-testing needle this week, and one pricked student tested positive for HIV on a preliminary test, officials said.
Health officials said the virus could not have been contracted from the needle stick, and they noted that preliminary tests can yield false positives.
The risk to students who were stuck after the possibly infected child depends on factors including the depth of the stick, health officials said.
The 8-year-old stuck her Taylor Elementary schoolmates Wednesday at the school's breakfast, at lunch and in the classroom, using a needle that was about one-third of an inch long, on the end of a device that looks like a pen, school officials said. They were unsure why the girl did it.
She was suspended and will probably be moved to another school, said Paul Vallas, the school district's chief executive.
Most of the students involved were taken to a hospital for testing and treatment, school officials said.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the risk of HIV infection after a needle stick is low, with an average of one in 300 cases leading to infection.

What? You are kidding right? A third grader in jail. *raises eyebrow*
She was probably just showing the kids how her mother tests her blood sugar. It doesn't say anything like she was running up to them and just stabbing them with it. They're kids - they do stuff like that. They all probably just wanted to see what it felt like when a diabetic has to test themselves.
My God, these are third graders - I hardly think they are aware of the dangers of what she was doing. How are they supposed to know about spreading HIV/AIDS, Hepititis and all that stuff.

Yep I remember in Elementary school, a kid brought a needle to school and stuck some of us with it. That was before Aids though. We all were naiive.

Reread the article - there's no evidence that its even an accurate test. As well, if that's the case, then his mother must have HIV - didn't say anything about that. The kids were tested. One came up with a positive for HIV. For starters, it quite often doesn't show up immediately, and if it does in an early test, often its a false positive.
There is no conclusive evidence from that article to say that the child infected anyone with anything. Yes, it wasn't smart, but kids do these things. Yes, I'm sure they're all aware now of the dangers, but there is still nothing to say anything was done intentionally or maliciously.

And most kids that age are still probably naiive. Afterall, they say HIV is now more previlant (sp?) among the 25 and under age group. Even though AIDS has been around their entire lifetimes, they're the ones out there now having unprotected sex. They become complacent and still have that "it won't happen to me" attitude.

Don't hate all children because of something one child did. Now that is stupid.
But the problem isn't just that one little kid decided to play an interesting game of Pin the Hypodermic on the Classmate...
..There isn't a day that goes by these days where you don't hear of an 8-year old scapling their two year old sister, or a 5 year old throwing their 3-year-old brother out the car window, or a ten year old hanging a classmate by the feet from a tree because they didn't get the good ball at recess.
What IS wrong with kids these days?
Ladies and gentlemen...my peers (Talking to the 16-21 crowd here)...you realize what's happening right? We're becoming the next generation of adults, and the kids coming in to take over our job are more messed up than WE were...and it's frightening as crap....cause whoulda ever thunk they could be worse than some of US (looks in mirror)
