I dont mean to disrespect Cheers fans, if you like the show, thats great.

But I dont like this show because it just depresses me. It takes place in the most unappealing setting imaginable- a bar. And in Boston. And everyone is always putting each other down. Its ok once in awhile, but basically the whole comedy in Cheers is just that- put downs. Thats what it is. And the characters are kind of losers and they dont want to amount to much. And they just sit there.

I just dont get it.

How many episodes have you actually watched? It's all about deep comedy using you brain to think below put downs. Underneath these characters rough extirior they are warm kind and loving. The writing is also comidic genius! I guess you're entitled to your own opinion.

Cheers never depressed me. I think the comedy is classic and it speaks to the average person.

Cheers isn't the least bit depressing. There are episodes that are sad, but that comes with every sitcom.

The bar is sort of their haven from life. The characters being sort of losers made them more endearing and relatable. If you don't understand that, then there's no use trying to explain anything about Cheers to you. Just don't watch the show.

Hardly depressing.

And what's wrong with Boston?? I've never been, but have had friends who've visited and they say it's a beautiful city. I found that just with some of the scenes from Ally McBeal too.

Speaking as someone who is known to spend alot of time in bars, I can honestly say that bars are far from depressing.
The bar my roommate and I frequent is a fun place, full of nice people who I have a great time with. I have developed some good friendships with the staff and fellow patrons, and we often do some activities outside the bar, like go to games or play golf.

Here is a link to the website of this bar. If you look around you'll see some contributions from a certian guy named TJL.

I'm featured in a few pics, but I'm not too thrilled with them.

I don't photograph well when I'm half in the bag.

I know the feeling!! Although there's one picture of me that's my favourite and it was taken when I was bagged in a bar. I know why I like it so much though - it looks nothing like me!!

Hmmmmmm........makes me wonder what you look like when you're fully in the bag!!?

Oh God - that reminds me of my brother's fraternity hazing!! They had to suck raw eggs and beer up through straws, then barf back into the bowl and keeping doing it until the brothers told them they could stop. The worst part was that it was about 6 guys that were pledging and only one big mixing bowl holding all of this!!:barf:

Everyones different and that's what makes these message boards so great! PErsonally I don't thinkn a bar is an unappealing setting; whenever I go to one I always have the most amazing time. People are dancing and laughing, and the karaoke bars are especially a hoot. Went to one last night and stayed until 2:00 just talking, seeing people dance, and hearing the various singers. I drank one drink and the rest as soda, not even a buzz as that's not the point. Went to a different bar the night before because my boyfriends friend is an aspiring musician and was playing in a band there. Didnt drink once and it was delightful. I see bars as places where people can unwind from the day, get together with strangers and laugh, listen to some good music, drink if they want, the only legal place now to smoke in Florida *lol*, and depending on it get some good food. I think Cheers was that place for the characters, where they had their friends and the pool table and the music and just ... well, a hangout spot.

As for put downs, I know Diane is put down by Carla, but don't see it overly much with the rest. A lot seems done with affection. Also, some friends do kid each other that way with no hard feelings exchanged.

I think its the characters I find unappealing in general. Not so much that its in a bar- although the bar setting doesnt help. But I just dont care much for the characters. I dont think they are funny or appealing in any way. (although Kirstie Alley was a nice piece of eye candy in the later years, but I digress).

Im a singer and a musician myself and I guess thats another reason I dont like the bar scene. Its just not a very uplifting place to play. Id rather play in a nice music hall or outdoor festival or a coffee house even or something more inspirational. Bars usually have some drunks and some guy playing an X-rated video game. Its just a place to get drunk or pick up people to sleep with for the most part. There are nice bars too. But a majority of them are sleazy gin joints. And I really just dont like this show for all of those reasons combined. I dont hate the show, I just dont really like it.

The underlying theme of the show is pretty depressing (a bunch of losers who were never able to amount to anything in life coming together in a bar), but the show's tone itself is generally fairly upbeat.

I just dont get it.What the **** i was going to give you so much **** but then read you like Wings and Three's Company, lol they like Cheers they all funny and take the **** of each other. I was thinking you were one of those How i meet your mother and Mad About You Nancy Boy who like these Drama shows who call themselves comedy.

How the hell can you not like Cheers when you like Wings that is basically Cheers but not as good of a cast not in a bar. They both funny sit coms.

Why does everyone keep saying that? ? Wings is NOTHING like Cheers. Thats why I like it. I think Crystal Bernard is cute! She is the main reason I watch the show. Its lighter, brisker, and the comedy is different than Cheers.

But, my favorite show is Mama's Family. Its truly underrated. Mad About You and How I met your mother are horrid. So is Slopfeld.

I am not really going to voice much of an opinion about most of what has been expressed through this thread. There is just one thing that I would like to state that I strongly disagree with! I think that "Mad About You" was one of the best series ever made! In my opinion Helen Hunt has never been surpassed or even equiled! It was my favorite show for most of its run. I just wish more seasons would make it to DVD!

I think Cheers is a funny show, but I will admit this here... I am also one of those people who prefers Wings to Cheers. Both shows are well-written, but I just find the Wings characters warmer and more likable. I'd hang at the airport lunch counter than the bar any day.

I think there's a difference between sad and depressing. I think Cheers has a lot of sadness, which is where a lot of comedy is born in the first place, therefore it works to a tremendous degree. Without the sadness, we don't laugh as much at the happiness.

An example of depressing is the final episode of M*A*S*H wherein Hawkeye tells the "chicken" story.
