Harlem represents "the ghetto" to most people (not a racial point; just a financial one).

Good Times is set in the ghetto.

So that's why they refer to Harlem.

Hmm...If I ever go to Chicago one day, I'd want to see those buildings...I always get a kick out of watching the opening credits, because 1970s Chicago looked like a fun place. All those people walking around the ghetto wearing afros. heheh. http://www.sitcomsonline.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

I was born and raised in Chicago, and yes, the show was based in the Cabrini-Green projects on the West side of Chicago. Not too far from Cooley High. They tore down most of the buildings, but there are a few left. You wouldn't believe that there are $1 Million+ homes a couple blocks away from there, called the Gold Coast.

I used to go to a cooking school near those buildings and gentrification (spelling) is taking over that area. The buildings are more near north side than west side. North of Chicago Ave and Sedgewick walking distance from the Magnificent Mile.
