Theaters Do Not Want To Offend Creationism Believers

CHARLESTON, S.C. -- Several IMAX theaters in the South have passed on showing a science film on volcanoes because of concerns it might offend people with fundamental religious beliefs who don't believe in evolution.

The IMAX production called "Volcanoes of the Deep Sea" makes a connection between microbes found in undersea volcanoes and human DNA.

Charleston IMAX director Lisa Buzzelli said it's important to chose films that will sell in her area. Buzzelli said many people in the Charleston area believe in creationism, not evolution.

She said she considers people's religious views when deciding which films to show. Buzzelli said she considered the handling of evolution in her decision.

The distributor for the film said IMAX theaters in Texas, Georgia and the Carolinas have refused to show the movie.

An official of the California Science Center fears the box-office ban could have a chilling effect on other science productions. He's afraid directors will drop all reference to evolution.

Everyone's afraid of offending someone. Everyone's afraid of being offended. Total reversal of the Scopes Monkey Trial 80 years ago when the fundies were laughed out of town on a rail. "Let's not make any kind of reference to primitive life so we don't offend the Anti-Science-ers."

Because Passion Of The Christ has biblical connections, this movie does not.

Why are you putting down my homeland?Perhaps because the South has a reputation of not being quite the most tolerant, open-minded of regions in the country.

Because Passion Of The Christ has biblical connections, this movie does not.So movies that have no "Biblical connections" are wrong? Lessee, that rules out "The Incredibles," "Collateral," "Napoleon Dynamite," etc., just about anything out there, really.

The problem that many people had with "The Passion of the Christ" was that they felt it was too violent and ant-semitic.

Oops! I did not realize the South was your homeland. I guess I should probably love it then.
