I was just curious if anybody knew if this really did happen or if it's some kind of a hoax?

From what I hear it true. But you never know, some people don't believe in that stuff at all.

On the DVD for "The Amityville Horror 4: the Evil Escapes," one of the extras is an entire history of the Amityville events and such. I'll copy it tomorrow.

Weird things really did happen at the house. There was a documentary thing on A&E about it. I don't live too far away from the house...

In 1974 Ronald DeFeo shot to death his parents and siblings in that house. That story is true. The story about the Lutz family experiencing strange phenomenons in the house after they moved into in 75/6 has always stirred controversy. It is said that the Lutz family along with some other people made these stories up in order to gain publicity. The house still stands although it bears little resemblance to the way it looked at the time of the murders. According to the A&E documentary the current owners have experienced nothing out of the ordinary while living there.

That's pretty much what it says on the DVD as well.

the new owners replaced the semi circle windows which made it recognizable as the house.
