Well, thanks again to Nick showing the early episodes I'm able to find answers to questions like this.
A couple of nights ago, an episode aired where Jed tells Jethro to ask his teacher about what causes that music.
Jethro comes back with an answer on a piece of paper that explains in detail how pushing on a button will cause those chimes to ring when some one comes to the door.
However, they then think that this means that someone is on the roof acting as a look out and pushing that button whenever they see someone approach.
As of yet, I'm not sure if and when they ever found out that the person at the door was actually the one ringing the doorbell, but I intend to keep watching I find out!

If you watch episode #6, "Trick or Treat", the Clampetts decide to call on their neighbors since no one has come to welcome them to the neighborhood. Jed uses to the doorbell by pressing the button which brings the governess to the door who in turn thinks they're trick or treaters. Apparently, Jed figured out how to use the doorbell at the neighbors house, but still couldn't understand how it worked at his own mansion.

Boy, talk about a routine that got real old, real quick. You know, even the lamest of lamebrains would have figured out the doorbell thing by the third episode or so. This is one of the few things they did during the first season that I found truly annoying...in some episodes they even reuse footage from earlier segments where the Clampetts are still baffled by the doorbell thing. Thankfully they discarded that schtick after the second season...it made them look more ignorant than they needed to!
What finally brought it to a halt was, for some reason, everybody in later episodes, regardless of who they were, chose to just tap on the door when they came to visit. Almost as if everyone simply knew better than to use the doorbell and confound the Clampetts.
