It irritates me when some people will say that the Munsters were a rip-off of the Addams Family, when in reality, both shows were being prepared at the same time and the Munsters debuted just a week later than the Addams Family.
Look at it even further and you can say that the Frankenstein and Dracula characters have been around alot longer than the Addamses. In movies and even further in literature.
I saw both shows for the first time when our local station ran them both back to back in the early 1970s. Even then, at the age I was, I couldn't see a comparison. I couldn't see what made the Addams Family a "monster family".

Oh, I like the Munsters better than the Adams Family but the Adams Family TV show was based on the long-running cartoon which appeared, I think, in the New York Times for years and years and years. So, even though the Munsters and Adams Family both premiered in the same season, it could be possible that the Munsters were produced in reaction to the Adams Family series being produced. In other words, people knew in advance that the Adams Family was going to be produced that season so they developed a show (i.e., Munsters) to compete against it. I don't know if this was actually the case, I'm just making an educated guess. Again, I like the Munsters much better. So I agree with you. Somebody loaned me a book one time with the old Adams Family cartoons in it and they were definitely bizarre. This is more what the show is based on--a bizarre family, not actually a "monster" family, per se.
