In the Father of the Year episode the reporters are in the house & Mr Brady walks in from the kitchen and says:
"What the hell's going on in here?"
That's the show where Marcia writes a letter to the paper & Mr B gets Father of the Year; Surprise Surprise Surprise!

Robert -
I watched the TV Land BB Marathon last weekend with much interest, particularly the ep. you referred to...
Re: Mike's cursing...I didn't tape the episode in which Mike supposedly says "What the hell is going on here?", but I did watch the ep when it was on...and, just for grins, I turned on the "closed captioning" on our TV to see what it would say during that scene...when Mike enters from the kitchen, the CC says, "What the devil's going on here?". And, it sounded to me like he could have said "devil's" instead of "hell is". Might have to tape it next time and play it back to see what he really said...but, I'd heard that "hell" story before, so I thought I'd check it out when the ep. aired. See what you think next time you watch it. Cheers!

I have the Columbia House tape containing that episode, and I just went back and watched that scene several times. It's extremely difficult to tell, but I believe he's saying "devil". Robert Reed kind of mumbles this line, and the laugh track covers the first syllable, so all you can really hear is "il". But his lips look like they're saying "devil" rather than "hell".

In "A Very Brady Christmas", Peter says "Peter and Valerie you lose, one hell of a greeting." After Carol answersthe door and says, "Peter and Valerie you lose" to mike because they were both guessing who would be at the door 1st.

No. He is saying "devil". There was never any cursing on the show.

In Bradyland "darn" would be a harsh swear word punishable by death!
I can't recall any swear words!

Yeah it was hard to tell when I heard it but then again devil sounds about right The thought of Mike saying hell is kinda far out.

I doubt if Sherwood Schwartz would've allowed any such "swear" words to exist in the Brady's world, at least not while they were kids. I can imagine him letting a "hell" slip into one of the later incarnations here and there, after the kids had grown up, but never in an original series episode. The closest I can remember to a swear word was when Cousin Oliver actually uttered the "s-e-x" word.

I remember Carol saying darn once. It was in the episode where Bobby feels like he is Cinderella. At the end she says darn that Cinderella that's what started this whole thing. Then Cindy comes in carrying a frog saying she kissed it twice & it still wasn't a prince. I remeber heck being said.
There was one episode where one of the kids called the other a "stinker" and Carol says "You know, I don't like that word". What's so bad about the word "stinker" I would love to know. PLease, I'd have a lot more to worry about than swearing in the early 70's.

Jan said "Darn" once, too. It was the episode where Marcia was taking her driver's test, and Jan was on the debate team. Jan got back from her debate, all excited about her win. She asked how Marcia did on the driver's test, and when told Marcia flunked, said "Darn."
Also, when told that Marcia was dating Harvey Klinger, Greg referred to him as "a double dingbat". And he said that Warren Mullaney (or "Warn Mullaney", as Marcia called him) was a "crumb". Do those count?
Slightly off-topic, does anyone remember when Greg dated Kathy Lawrence to get back at Marcia for dating Warren? When Marcia heard about it, she said, "Kathy Lawrence? He knows she's at the bottom of my list!" How Nixon-esque for Marcia to be keeping an enemies list.

In the episode, where Jan's allergic to Tiger, and Mike spills the beans to the boys, about having to give Tiger away, I think Bobby said, "DAMN THAT JAN, ANYWAY"!
The word "HELL" is not always meant as a curse word. In my opinion, Peter didn't mean it that way, in "A Very Brady Christmas."

I've got that one on tape -- Bobby says "darn", not "damn". Would have been funny, though.

I have the whole series on DVD,
I can attest that sometimes the closed captioning can be inaccurate. But what I remember from "Father of the Year" is Mike walking into the room and saying, "What's going on here?"
But watch for what I believe is a post-production voice over in "Is There a Doctor in the House?" Alice and Carol are in the kitchen keeping track of family illnesses on a blackboard. (I always thought this scene was stupid and used to kill time.) Robert comes in and looking at the board says, "Besides, this is wrong, none of the kids have had shots for distemper." It appears that the word "distemper" has been dubbed. Robert seems to mouth the word "rabies" but probably had one of his realism conniptions, so the line was changed to "distemper."

Not in an episode, but on their recording of "American Pie," the Brady Kids drop the "hell" word (which is a lyric from the song)!
