What the heck happened to rock music?!?

I have to admit I've been out of the trends in music for about 2 years now. I work in radio but it deals with news and sports talk. I used to love rock bands like Guns N Roses, The Smashing Pumpkins, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Creed, Drowning Pool, Hole, The Ramones, White Stripe etc, etc.


Yesterday, I decided I wanted to listen to some tunes, so I turned on K-Rock(my local rock radio station) The first song I heard was a sort of rap/rock song with Jay Z and Linkin Park and the second song I heard was a remake of John Lennon's Imagine from somebody I forgot. What the heck?!? It seemed every song was either rappish or a slow song. What happened to the rock? No offense to you guys who like it, but what happened to ROCK music?

That's what classic rock radio is for. And what is even worse is that the bands that do play rock, sound like all the others.

The only bands that come close are:
Jet - and everyone hates them.
Velvet Revolver

You may want to check out a new band that Neal Schon from Journey has put together. They have a CD coming out on Dec. 7, the name of the band is Soul Sirkus. Just go to SoulSirkus.com. But to me they have nothing special to make them stand out either.

There's Velvet Revolver, who are amazing.:rock: Of course, I would expect nothing less from Slash and Duff.

Yeah I've noticed that, too. It seems a lot of the music played on the radio is either rap or pop music. The rock 'n' roll of the good old days like the Beatles and Buddy Holly and the Kinks and other stuff is just not played much anymore. It's sad. Rock 'n' roll is the best music. I wish rock 'n' roll music would come back and be more mainstream than it is nowadays.

Rock n Roll is not dead. On the mainstream it is. You just have to search and look deeper. Right now, the majority that rock radio is playing sounds the same. I suggest going beyond the mainstream. However, there are exceptions. But that's another subject.

That's my opinion too. I get sick of hearing people say this is dead/that is dead. Rock, soul, disco, whatever, it's all still around. If you let yourself be a slave to what they play on your local radio station, then that's all you're going to know. You have to seek out whatever music you want to hear. Mainstream radio, major labels and MTV airplay don't define whether or not a particular genre is "dead." There are other outlets to discover the types of music that you're interested in.

It may not be dead, but it's def put on the backburner for more mainstream music. Even local stations I get basically play rap, or music from Britney, Christina, etc...

Nirvana and Pearl Jam, well they've died out- mainly because the 'grunge era' is long over, and Nirvana for more obvious reasons. The Ramones, well, the old-school punk age has, unfortunately, died out as well. But there's still no excuse for these awesome bands not to be played on the radio . Jay-Z does not play the gutiar, drums, or bass. Therefore, he should not be on rock stations, period.

The band is A Perfect Circle, and I've heard that song also. I think it's the highest insult anyone could ever give to Lennon. "Imagine" has been done over before (Tori Amos, for instance) but at least the song was the same tune. With this remake, you can't even understand what the song is. It's utterly disgusting.

If I may be politically incorrect, rock music is dominated by white guys with guitars, and white guys and guitars are two tihngs that there are going to be a whole lot less of in the future. Teen pop and rap are enjoyed by white and black people alike, and rap in particular has a self-renewing inner-city street culture to feed off to stay vibrant. Sorry, but that's the truth, Ruth!

I don't think rock is dead, but it definitely isn't what it used to be. Most kids today don't even know what a "guitar solo" is. I'm 16 and most of my friends have no clue who the Stones, Led Zeppelin, Van Halen, the Eagles, and all of the other classic rock bands are. It's really sad, but there are a few bands today that are trying to keep rock alive, like Jet, Velvet Revolver, the Darkness. So, in the words of Neil Young, Keep on rockin' in the free world!
