I was watching a special on VH1 awhile ago where they were talkin about the corniest songs ever made & Lionel Richie's Dancing On The Ceiling song was one of the songs that people think was corny. There is nothin corny to me about that song. As a matter of fact, i love the song. What's ya'll opinions about it? I think people said the video was corny too cause Lionel & some people in the video were dancing upside down on the ceiling.

What is happening here?
Something's going on
It’s not quite clear
Somebody turn on the light
We’re gonna have a party
It’s starting tonight

Oh, what a feeling!
When we’re dancing on the ceiling
Oh, what a feeling!
When we’re dancing on the ceiling

The room is hot...that’s good
Some of my friends came
By from the neighborhood
People were starting
To climb the walls
Ooh, it looks like everybody
Is having a ball

Everybody starts to lose control
When the music is right
If you see somebody hanging around
Don’t get uptight
The only thing we wanna do tonight
Is go round and round
And turn upside down
Come on, let’s get down

So come on, let’s get loose
Don’t hold back
Because it ain’t no use
Hard to keep your feet on the ground
Because when we like to party
We only want to get down

It's right there in the lyrics. You'd think a 10 year old wrote that song. Hell yeah it's corny. Dancing On The Ceiling is probably the crappiest song Lionel Richie ever came up with.

well, DOTC isn't so bad as a novelty song, but from someone like Lionel Richie, I think people demanded better.

I remember before it came out, hearing that the title track from Lionel's upcoming album is "Dancing on The Ceiling" I said, wow that's gotta be a good funky dance song with a title like that. Then I finally hear it and it turns out to be some lame pseudo dance pop crappy single that's a step below generic aerobics music. Ugh puke:

I saw Lionel live a few years back when he toured with Tina Turner, and his live version of the song blows away the original. He actually got most people on their feet, the live version was a bit harder and funkier.

That was funny because I saw Lionel in the early 80's and Tina was opening for him (this was before "Private Dancer" made her a huge star) & then a few years ago it was the other way around - Lionel was opening for Tina!

Rodney Dangerfield was in Dancing On The Ceiling video? I haven't seen that video in a long time so he probably is in it. Dancing On The Ceiling album is very good to me. I like the songs Se La, Say U Say Me, Love Will Conquer All, Don't Stop, Ballerina Girl on that album. Lionel said he's gonna reunite with The Commodores some yrs ago for a new album but they still haven't done anything yet. It would be nice to see him do a reunion album with them. I don't know why they kept releasing albums after he left the group LOL. The guy who replaced Lionel in the group wasn't a good replacement. Walter Orange sang lead on most of The Commodores songs after Lionel left but he isn't a better singer than Lionel.

Dancing On The Ceiling was the worst album of the 80s. Lionel Richie completely lost his soul by then. The same guy who did Easy, Zoom and all those other great old songs. He lost it with this album. He had the wannabe reggae song with Se La, the wannabe country song with Deep River Woman, the wannabe rock song Tonight Will Be Alright. Too bad they weren't wannabe good. Lyrically, all the songs sound like they were written by a ten year old (Ballerina Girl, you are so lovely, with you standing there, I am so aware, of how much I care for you). WTF? And Say You Say Me? Say what? That song didn't make any sense. That whole album was WACK!!

Whatever. It's obvious u & i have different music tastes. I'm a Lionel Richie fan & he's never made a wack album to me even though i haven't heard anymore of his solo albums after Dancing On The Ceiling album. I really like his Can't Slow Down album. He had a lot of tight songs on that album. As a matter of fact, there wasn't one bad song on that album. Every Prince album hasn't been tight so don't let me get started on your boy Prince so i know you're a fan of his. I stopped liking him after Diamonds & Pearls album. Dancing On The Ceiling album is better than Prince's Around The World In A Day & Parade(Under The Cherry Moon) albums. LOL@Big Pun dissin Prince on Fat Joe's My World song saying we've been doing this since Prince was the bomb, even when he changed his name & started making wack songs hahahahahahahahahahaha.

Around The World In A Day and Parade were GREAT albums... they just weren't easily devourable the way Purple Rain was. I was actually just listening to Parade yesterday, very underrated.

Vashti IS a Lionel Richie fan, he's said so many times.

I can accept that. I've gone years being a Prince fan and having people get on my case about it, so that's nothing new. And as usual, this year more and more people start jumping on the Prince bandwagon that I've been on for over 20 years. But you asked for our opinions on Dancing On The Ceiling and I just gave my opinion. Lionel made good music before that, but that entire album is substandard lazy in every way. There was no focus. Like I said above, he tried to cover as many different genres with songs on that album it was obvious. A pseudo dance track, a pseudo reggae song, a pop ballad, a country song, etc. There's nothing memorable or moving. It was just a completely lazy effort. Check out the lyrics to each one of the songs on that album and point out anything meaningful he's saying on that album. Anyone who knows music can listen to Around The World In A Day or Parade and get some sense of musicianship, cleverness in the lyrics, something. There's none of that on Dancing On The Ceiling.

Actually, I think that "Dancing on the Ceiling" is a catchy pop song.
For my taste it is Lionel Richie's best song. The video is fun too.

Dancing On The Ceiling isn't his best song. It's hard for me to say which song is his best cause i like a lot of his songs & he's a great songwriter. The songs he wrote when he was with The Commodores are awesome like Sail On, Still, Three Times A Lady, Lady(U Bring Me Up), Oh No. All Night Long, Stuck On U, Love Will Find A Way, Hello, Running With The Night are also awesome songs.

"Dancing on the Ceiling" was a great album by Lionel Richie. It has all the songs like the title song, "Don't Stop", "Love Will Conquer All", "Ballerina Girl" and "Say You, Say Me". It was a terrific album made by Lionel Richie himself. I like other albums like the Commodores. If you just enjoying that album, try the Commodores 1979 album "Midnight Magic". It has songs like "Sail On" and "Still". That's your best bet.

even though I do like a couple of songs on DOTC (Love Will Conquer All was a good slow jam for him), but if you notice. Although the album sold very well for Lionel and had several hit singles... none of the singles continue to get airplay these days. You still hear the Can't Slow Down and Lionel Richie hits on AC stations, but never Dancing On The Ceiling. I wouldn't say the album sucked because I do like a few songs on it, but it was not the worthy successor to Can't Slow Down people were anticipating.

Can't Slow Down was decent, but of course, being the Prince fan, I'm upset that it robbed Purple Rain of the Album of The Year Grammy that year. I thought Lionel's solo debut was his most solid album.

well, yes, I don't think Can't Slow Down was anywhere near the best album of the (late 83-mid 84) period in which is was eligible. I suppose Lionel won because he was all "safe" while Prince was very controversial in his day

It was a strong category that year. In addition to those two, you had Cyndi's She's So Unusual, Tina's Private Dancer, and Bruce's Born In The USA. All 5 were monster albums, but Lionel's was definitely the safest pick of the bunch. I would have accepted Tina or Bruce beating Prince.

I'd say Lionel's was the weakest of that catagory. I liked it, but I would say it was by far the one that stands out least of those five.

Dancing on the Ceiling is a weak song to me. As for the album I like Love Will Conquer All the best. the lyrics aren't his strongest, but its probably the closest thing to rhythm and blues on that record. Once this guy went solo he put r&b on the shelf almost completely.

His new record Just for You has a vrey corny lyric about life being all cake and ice cream. I laughed when I figured out that that was what he was singing. Still he can still sing very well IMO. Actually, I think original themes in his lyrics were never really his strong suit. It's more his vocal ability and general musicianship.

Full House i'm glad somebody else has heard The Commodores Midnight Magic album besides me. That's a very good album. Wonderland song is also on that album which was a hit for them. I got a copy of The Commodores Heroes album on cd off the internet. It's not available on cd at the record stores cause it's out of print. The song Jesus Is Love is on that album which gets played on Tom Joyner morning radio show Monday-Friday. I think Lionel's Can't Slow Down album is better than his first self titled album.

Lionel is great when it comes to making love songs but he sure is dumb as hell when it comes to women LOL. It doesn't make any sense to me that he would have his ex wife still living with him when she's asking him for a lot of money from their divorce. Lionel said he went & asked his accountant did he have that much money in his bank account that his ex wife asked for & his accountant told him no LOL. If i was Lionel, i would've been kicked her ass out of the house. She got a lot of nerve asking him for lots of money anyway when he's the one that made all that money.

LOL@Bronxgirl hahahahahahahahahaha. That's true. Remember when his ex wife Brenda beat him up after she caught him with the woman who is his ex wife right now that's living with him? Hahahahahahahahahahahaha. How is he gonna let her beat him up? What a clown Lionel is. On a episode of Steve Harvey Show, Steve & Cedric got stuck in a elevator cause Clyde & T Bone played a prank on Steve & Cedric so Steve figured it out that Clyde & T Bone was messing with him & Cedric. So Steve told Cedric, The Hightops pulled this same prank on The Commodores when they was performing the same night with them. Steve said when Lionel's ex wife Brenda found out about what pretty Tony did, she beat him as bad as she beat Lionel hahahahahahahahaha. Pretty Tony(Ronald Isley of Isley Brothers) was in The Hightops on Steve Harvey Show.

I'm sorry "Dancing On The Ceiling" was not one of Lionel Richie's best work. Even the video was bad but I do love "Love Will Conquer All. ". And also to answer isiahthomas never underestimate the strength of a woman scorn, she can become as strong as 10 body builders. Especially when your stupid enough to bring your new ho to your house where you can easliy get caught
