List any shows that you either became a fan of from viewing them for the first time via dvd, or if it's a show you'd only seen through dvd and not tv.
For me:
"24" - never saw it on tv, rented the first season set through netflix, became a fan bought seasons 1 & 2 roughly this time last year. I didn't watch season 3 on tv, I'm waiting for the dvd.
"Freaks & Geeks" - never saw an episode on tv. Heard good things about it so I bought the dvd when it came out. Great show, it's my favorite tv show I never saw on tv.
"Sopranos" - got into the show years after it's been on after a friend lent me his dvd set to introduce me to the show. Became a fan after watching the first three seasons on dvd. Though I have HBO, I've never watched the Sopranos on tv. That'll change by next season, I have a least a year and a half to get caught up.
"Playmakers" - I always wanted to catch this ESPN series, but simply never did. I recently rented the dvd set through netflix and watched the entire series in a couple of days. I would've liked for it to come back for a second season, it's contrived and predictable but I still liked it.

Never really watched it. Every body said it was good so I hedged my bets & bought the 1st season DVD - great show!

Curb Your Enthusiasm
I had only seen bits and pieces, from stuff like the TVGuide Channel or the Emmys. I knew it starred the Seinfeld creator, so that was a big incentive. Seeing that I dont have HBO, I decided what the hell -- for all the movie I didnt spend on HBO the past 16 years of my life, its only chump change for the DVD. And I loved it. I still haven't watched it on TV.... but the DVDs are great. I still have to get Season 2, but Im already waiting for Season 3.

Renting a TV show on DVD sounds a lot better than buying a TV show you never saw before. Just like i plan to start watching Seinfeld on TV before I go BUY the DVD. I think I would only discover a TV show in syndication rather than DVD because I like to know my money is being well spent.

 that's what I would do, especially if it's a show I'm not sure I will like to own. I would wanna make sure I liked more than a few episodes.

Yes, renting dvds is fine. Freaks & Geeks is the only one I never saw at all before making a purchase and it turned out to be good. I don't ever buy a dvd set without doing a lot of research, reading other people's comments, etc. I'm aware of my taste and whether or not I'd like a particular show to take a chance and buy it. If it ends up as something you don't like, you can always sell it on Ebay or try to get someone to trade for something you would like. I don't have a problem spending my money on dvds.

I've never completely bought a show blind, but there've been ones I had only seen a few episodes of before buying.
I only saw maybe three Farrah era episodes of Charlie's Angels then I bought season 1, and then I liked that enough I got season 2 .
back before it was part of Sci-Fi's daily rotation, I remember seeing a 6-episode block of Roswell back around January or so, and LOVED it, so I bought season 1 as soon as it came out and finished it within 10 days after I started, and I have seen quite a few season 2 and 3 episodes since on Sci-Fi and definately plan to complete the series.
completely different but relevant to the topic. When I bought seasons 1-3 of Simpsons in June, I honestly hadn't seen the show since early 1992... but for $15 a pop, I decided I'd make the money back if I didn't like it, and I figured if I enjoy a show like South Park, I probably will like Simpsons in a new light. And I finished seasons 1, 2 and 3 in barely over a week and immediately got season 4, and finished that quickly too. Now I'm watching it in prime time and reruns (since there's 11 seasons missing so far, lol) and catching up and being able to enjoy the show in a completely different way as an adult than when I was 10-12

I also watched the Simpsons early on and back then thought it was the best comedy on television. I wondered why the writing on live action sitcoms wasn't as funny as the Simpsons seemed to be. I don't know why I ever stopped but I think it has something to do with it being animated. I've loved all the South Park episodes I've seen too but never made an effort to consistently come back and watch episode after episode. I only seem to get into the older toons I watched as a kid (Flintstones, Bugs Bunny, Fat Albert). I haven't seen the Simpsons in years, but if I were to find a $15 deal like that I'd give it a try too.

Since my last post in this thread, two more shows have become big favorites of mine from discovering them on dvd: Father Murphy and Joan of Arcadia.
Father Murphy is a Little House on The Prairie type of show. I didn't expect to like it but the more I watched, the more I became a fan.
Joan of Arcadia, I never watched a full episode on tv, just a few minutes here and there, but watching the dvd set made me fall in love with this show. One of the best shows on tv, hopefully it'll be renewed for another season.

since the thread:
Popular - probably the most underrated series in the WB's catalog. Running for two seasons, we get introduced to the wackiest, campiest cast of teenagers. From the sisterly catfights between Sam and Brooke, the evil schemes of Nicole, the sheer outrageousness of Mary Cherry (her "Rock Me Amadeus" scene towards the end of season 2 rates as the greatest moment in the shows history IMO), the dumb hunkiness of Josh, and tons of campy guest appearences (Erik Estrada, Delta Burke, Jm J Bullock, RuPaul, etc....), this show is freaking genius and despite some too-dramatic episodes in the second season (such as Harrison's leukemia and Brooke's bulimia), it was 43 hours of brilliance. I never watched it until DVD but had to check it out because of friends who loved it. Unfortunately the second season ends with a cliffhanger, and as of four years later, it hasn't been resolved.
Mork And Mindy - I knew all about the show before, and I'd seen bits and pieces as a child, but it wasn't until DVD that I truly watched the show. I got it from a tradein and flew through the set. Robin Williams is a sheer comic genius and it was obvious even in 1978 that his talents weren't going to be contained to television.

What's Happening and Good Times... I knew I used to watch it as a kid, but couldn't remember anything apart from the opening titles.
Just ordered the Hardy Boys Mysteries too as I wanted some more 1970's family fun. Here's hoping I like it!

I've been watching Three's Company since the 90's. I always did enjoy it growing up. :)
DDD only lists region 1 DVD's, so I don't know if they would work with Australian DVD players.

Planet of the Apes, the 1974 live-action series. I knew of its existence from a Planet of the Apes documentary and the Internet but never got a chance to see the episodes when they aired or on SFC. The DVD quickly became mine upon release and I loved it.

I had remembered Futurama, but never had the chance to watch it on TV, so when I bought the first season as a blind buy I was hooked and it remains one of my favorite shows.

I got to say QUEER AS FOLKS.
I never saw that show before.........no cable here.
Last year, my gay friends brought over the first season to my place.
I was intrigued by the show.
We couldn't stop watching that show at all.
It was exciting to watch a brillant show like that.
I like all the characters and the relationships.

I "discovered" the Sopranos via the DVD sets. Since I don't have HBO, I've never been able to watch it when the episodes first air. Although I had heard of it before and was interested, I made a point NOT to watch any episode or begin watching the episodes until I was able to see it from the beginning and follow it along. Then, I bought season one in a used cd store and the rest is history!!!! I became hooked to that series and thankfully was able to buy the other season sets at a good price. I really enjoy that show and it's thanks to their release on dvd.
Next, "24" is another show that I never got to see on regular TV. I bought one of the intro dvd's at Walmart for $5.50 which had the first two episodes of the first season and really enjoyed those episodes. So when I saw the season one and season two sets in another used cd store, I snapped them up. I just finished watching season one of "24" not too long ago. I haven't begun watching season two yet.
Next, "Dark Shadows" is a show that I have become hopelessly addicted to via DVD sets. I was too young to watch this show as a child. I remember it being shown but I was too young to regularly watch it. Now 40 years later, I am discovering Dark Shadows through the dvd releases and am enjoying every minute of it.
Finally, the "Prisoner" is again a show similar to Dark Shadows that I remember it being on but I was too young at the time to enjoy it. Due to the DVD release of the complete series, I am able to enjoy this show.

Respectfully,

Both shows I loved.
I saw them in their original run.
I may watch my first season of SOAP today.
I brought it few months ago and I haven't open it yet.
I may wait to watch it with my friend thou; he wasn't allowed to watch Soap or Three's Company while growing up.
