What do you think causes a person to be unfaithful to their significant other? Do you think its a genetic thing? Or is it an acquired trait? Or is it just because that person isnt happy in their relationship?

I've been thinking about this lately. It makes me wonder. Like...I dunno. My grandfather cheated on my grandmother. My father cheated on my mom. My brother cheats on all of his girlfriends. It makes me wonder if its like a genetic thing or just something that people do because its the only thing they've known. But I do think that a lot of people cheat because they cant find any happiness or satisfaction in their current relationship.

What about you guys? What do you think?

Most men are pigs. There are a few out there that are good. I don't think that an easy answer. I know my dad cheated on my mom. The thing is my dad was married before my mom, and he cheated on his first wife as well. I think part of it may be that their not happy with the relationship. On another level though I think their not happy with them selfs. My dad had or has a lot of problems, and I know he couldn't have been happy with himself or anybody for that matter so he turned to other people to make himself happy witch in the end only made him even more unhappy. But I think all cases are different. I think in my dad's case once a cheater always a cheater.

Sorry, but I dont like when people say "most men are pigs." Its not true. SOME men are pigs, as well as SOME women are pigs. My dad isnt a pig, im not a pig, my grandfather wasnt a pig, my friends arent pigs, ect. Most men are pigs isnt a true statement, nor is it respectful.

Hmmmm, interesting question.
I think it's less genetic and more learned....as in the case with your 3 generations that seem to tend towards infidelity, it could be that they saw the example and came to think that it's okay to be unfaithful.
I had one guy cheat on his girlfriend with me, I later found out that he'd done it a few times before. It's definitely a cycle where if someone does it once, they continue until they get extremely caught up in their own mess.
And the other who had some issues with infidelity...yeah, I'm still waiting for an explaination and doubt it's coming. Which brings me to the bottom line: men can be pigs

I really don't think it is a genetic thing. In many cases, I do think the reason is because it's the only thing they've known and observed.

I dunno...I'm with Mandie. Men are just pigs. pig:

I don't see any reason to cheat. If you're unhappy in your current relationship, JUST GET THE HELL OUT! If you see someone you suddenly like better, then leave your current. One night flings don't cut it with me. If you have some sort of sick and twisted need to constantly have sex or you like playing around with different people, just don't commit to ANYONE. Don't get married, don't get engaged, don't even go "steady."

And that goes for women that cheat too. Adulterers are the lowest form of life there is living. Worse than the scum scum feeds off of.

It's not genetic. IT's in who you (the person) are.

I could not cheat for any reason. I'm in the beginning stages of a relationship right now and there is no way I would even THINK of screwing things up by running out and cheating. It's not in who I am, I've never been a person to do that and I never will be.

IF you are in a situation where you are so unhappy you even THINK of cheating, you need to change the situation. Cheating makes it worse.

I don't know, but I do know that men and women both cheat for different reasons.
Sorry if I was no help.

I've never been one to cheat, so.. I dunno. If anything, I'd say it's learned behavior. One (or both) of their parents cheated, maybe they got away with it so they think, "Hmm, so that's how relationships work! Worked for them, it'll work for me." If the person they're married to or dating allows them to cheat time and time again, there's another thing to look at. He/she is letting me, so why quit? A guy I dated a few years ago cheated on me. His excuse? "I love women! Sorry, but I can't help it." I later found out that lots of women had turned right back around and returned the favor for him. ;)

Anyway, I agree that men are not the only ones who cheat. Women are just as guilty and like Cathy said, if you're going to cheat... why bother getting into a relationship in the first place? If you feel the need to run wild and be with every man/woman out there, fine. But don't crap on the person you're with.

I don't think it's genetic. There are many reasons why men and women are unfaithful to each other, the most obvious one being they are no longer happy in their relationship for whatever reason. If they were truely happy they wouldn't be cheating. Genes don't have anything to do with it.

Recently I read an article where scientists say they have isolated a gene in animals- and when the gene is adjusted the likelihood of infidelity is changed. Basically, they say that animals which are monogamous the feelings of sex with their partner, and have a deeper respect, while other animals do not. The ones that don't aren't monogamous. Scientists believe this could be the same for human beings. But it would also change our behaviour.

However, there has to be more than genes in many cases- sometimes I think it's boredom. I men, once people marry each other- there's probably some excitement gone- you've got the person, so you feel you don't have to try as hard anymore.
