There's some show that was cancelled in the middle of the first airing

I dont' know the name of it, but it was so bad they cancelled it in the middle of the show. It was one of the questions they had on Hollywood Squares, but I can't remember the name of the show. Any know?

That would be Turn On, from 1969. The Laugh-In-esque series was so poorly recieved that some stations pulled it before the end of the broadcast. It never returned for a second episode. It aired on ABC.

That is unheard of- especially in 1969 when shows would stick around for at least 13 weeks. Was there something offensive about this that made it get yanked? I could see this happening today but in 1969?

Oh, it was offensive. If I recall correctly from what I've read, there was a "blackout" segment in which the word SEX was flashed on the screen. A rather long segment. I believe another segment involved a condom dispensing machine. Can't really recall.

But yes. In a word, it was offensive.

That's very interesting. I wasn't around in 1969 (not born until 14 years later) but that's weird to have an offensive show like that then!

Turn-On may be the only show (that I'm aware of) to be "cancelled" before it finished airing but there are several other shows that only lasted for one episode. Additionally, there are a handful of shows that were produced but have never aired. I don't mean just a pilot, I'm talking about three or four (or more) episodes that are just shelved.

Turn-On is, however, one of the biggest television flops of all time.

There was a show hosted by Jackie Gleason named You're in the Picture. It was a game show in which the celebrities stuck their heads through a picture and tried to guess what the picture was. It was so awful that the next week Jackie Gleason used the time slot to apologize to America for putting the show on the air.

The Three Stooges made a pilot, and some episodes (I think) of a show in 1968 called "Kooks Tour" where they played thinly disguised versions of themselves in retirement, and taking a trrip around the world. But it was never shown because Larrry (the shaggy-haired one) suffered a stroke while they were filming it and died a few years later.


And this doesn't really have anything to do with this subject, but in the early 80s, Gary Burghoff (Radar from M*A*S*H) filmed a pilot for a spinnoff series called W*A*L*T*E*R that was only shown once inn the middle of July or August at something like 10 or 10:30 p.m. and only in a couple areas of the country.

It aired only on the West Coast, I believe. A CBS special presentation in 1984. Quite rare.

yes, it is quite rare. It was about Radar working as a cop. I wonder if it'll ever be released on DVD.
