Interestingly enough, Merrie Spaeth (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0816580/maindetails) auditioned for that role. I found out about it in a TV Guide microfilm from 1971.

You are apparently referring to Cindy Carol who played Gidget in the 1963 film "Gidget Goes To Rome". This actress also went by the name of Carol Sydes when she appeared in a number of TV shows like: Medic, Leave it to Beaver, The Donna Reed Show and Bachelor Father.

There was an article in a 1960's TV Guide that featured Cindy Carol. In it, she was labeled under the then-new term of a "Peppy Girl" (not preppy - but peppy). There was also a photo accompanying that article showing her in a dance-like pose wearing go-go boots.
