Jeffersons and THat's My Mama
IN 1974, critics called That's My Mama a great show. Only lasted a season and a half.
In 1975, critics said the Jeffersons was a AWFUL show, they said the theme STUNK and that George was snobbish. And that the show would not last. The show lasted from 75-85.
Anyone else know when TV critics were wrong?

The Critics never gave new shows a chance. Most shows got bad reviews in their first season. These four long-running shows got bad 1st season reviews:
The Facts of Life
Who's the Boss?
Full House
Everybody Loves Raymond

Well the first season of Facts of Life was kind of weird. There were like 15 teenage girls living under one roof while one of them always wore skates-LOL

Reginald VelJohnson said that critics thought "Family Matters" wouldn't make it past the first season. It of course made 9 seasons.
All the critics loved "Andy Richter Controls the Universe", but it only lasted two mid seasons.

Probably because in season one, Family Matters was a laid back comedy.
The critics didn't like According to Jim, and it's doing well.

The critics hated M*A*S*H during its first season and we all know how wrong they were.

The critics called Laverne and Shirley "tv junk food". I don't think the critics liked Three's Company either.

Critics are stupid and hypocritical sometimes.
But any fan of The Dick Van Dyke Show, Cheers or Seinfeld knows perfectly well that if it weren't for critics, none would be what they are today.

Lets see:
1. Blair
2. Nancy
3. Sue Ann
4. Tootie
5. Molly
6. Cindy
7. Natalie
There was 7. But 7 is still a lot.

I don't agree with TV critics about Wings. I don't think it is a bad Cheers rip-off at all. I think it's such a funny and well-written show and I'd rather watch Wings than some other critically-acclaimed favorites out there.
I don't agree with critics about Friends. Good riddance to bad rubbish, in my opinion.

I read once that the critic said the only good things about "Wings" were Thomas Haden Church (Lowell) and Tony Shalhoub (Antonio). I have never read a good review on "Wings", but I can't remember anything else besides what I just said.
However, despite the critic's bashing, Wings still lasted 7 and a half seasons. So it really doesn't matter what they think, since I have 172 episodes to watch in reruns.

they also said that wings used the same type of structure/formula as cheers but less succesfully: similar setting, similar characters...etc.
but wings is still a good show - a lot better than most shows.

they were wrong about MASH (not M*A*S*H-hollywood added the astericks to the title) when it first started. TIME magazine called it "the biggest dissapointment of the 1972-73 fall season".
They also didn't like "The Dick van Dyke show" at first, and I think they hated "The Beverly Hillbilies"

I remember the guy who used to write for the Couch Critic at TV Guide liked Wings. I also remember reading a positive review in some newspaper near the show's ending. Those are the only positive reviews of Wings I can think of. I'll never understnad the animosity towards Wings. I think it has all the elements of a classic sitcom.
A few weeks ago, Matthew Gilbert, the TV critic for The Boston Globe, wrote about how he hates Everybody Loves Raymond and can never understand the popularity of that show. A few years ago, I would have disagreed. Now, I totally agree with him!

That's strange. I never really heard of any critics hating Wings. I remember watching an ep of SNL with Jerry Seinfeld and in his monologue(this was after Seinfeld ended) he said he watches Wings all the time on USA(this was 1999 I think). It was nice that a big tv star put over Wings.
