Nancy Disses FOL

I was recently made aware of an interview in the "Village Voice" with Nancy Mckeon in which when asked about her FOL days she had this to say:

"I hold mixed emotions about those years, on one hand it was a good time in my life but on the other it was one of the worst periods in my life as well. I don't like to discuss the nine seasons that I did the show; it is over and done with. The thing that bugs me the most are the fanatical people that worship the show and memorize every camera angle and piece of dialogue. These are the people that insist upon calling me 'Jo' when they encounter me in the street and the ones that I choose to ignore; I won't sign any autographs if they call me 'Jo.' That may sound harsh but if it is the only way they can see me as Nancy Mckeon, actress, instead of Jo than so be it. I made a conscious decision to divorce myself from the bubblegum role of the "Facts of Life" and that is why I chose not to participate in the reunion movie. I want people to see me as a serious actress on the "Division" and other similar projects instead of as an adolescent sitcom character."

Yeah, I was going to ask the same thing. On Nancy's interview on "The View", she never said anything that mean towards FOL. I really think that is fake. Because if it is, please do not post mess like that.

According to my friends who live in NY, they have never heard of such a paper. Do you have a valid source? Why would Nancy make such a quote in a NY newspaper?
Also, in recent articles and TV appearances she said she has fans running up to her calling her Jo and she acknowledges them warmly. Even in the PEOPLE magazine it said something to the effect of a waitress serving "Jo".

What a way to lose fans!!! Ok, I LUV Nancy, she's my fave actress so of course I DON'T want to believe that. BUT, if it is true... I can see that ya, she might want to move on, but must she be so, (uhhh I can't think of a better word)forward about it? I hate when I hear about actresses/actors that would rather forget the role that made them famous, or forget their childhood or whatever. Well when i went to college they used to give it out for free in the student union. The village voice is an alternative newspaper of sorts. I am preety sure it comes out weekly and is still being published.

Nancy's response, is totally understandable. Typecasting has been something that many actors and actresses have to face and deal with. This is the way Nancy deals with it. We all look back at our adolecence and remember good times and bad times. Remembering doing The Facts of Life, obviously brings back both good and bad memories for Nancy.

The way I look at it. She was nice about talking about The Facts of Life on "The View" and "Rosie O' Donnell" why would she be any different in a Magazine Article? It doesn't make any sense. She said people are great. Yeah, I'm sure she doesn't like being called Jo because that's not her. So obviously she wouldn't like it. Neither would she like it if someone called her Jinny. Which is perfectly understandable,but I don't believe she would be rude and say anything like that about 'The Facts of Life'. If you read it over that whole thing is dissing this whole damned message board. No offense to anyone,but it seems scammed to me. To get people pissed at Nancy. Otherwise, why would she say something like that to a Reporter and not on a Show like Rosie or the View. Afterall 'The View' is a show to Voice Your VIEW..
Therefore, I do not believe it. I'll take my butt back over to 'The Division' board now. I never post over here,but this specific topic got called to my attention and I had to voice my opinion.

I went to this website and did a search for any articles for Nancy and this is what came up.

You searched all articles that contain the keyword Nancy McKeon.

I also did searches on Facts of Life, The Facts of Life, Facts Reunion Movie, The Facts of Life Reunion Movie and still
the same came up nothing. So I guess since my family is from the show me state I will not believe it until 1) I hear it with my own ears preferably cause I know that the magazine reporters like to take what people say and twist it to make it more interesting and for their magazines to sell. So I don't believe half of what I read. I prefer to hear things myself out of that person'e mouth. Just my opinion. But I can understand her not wanting to be called Jo or Jinny or any other character she has played cause that is what it is a character that she plays. She is Nancy and that is the way it should be. Can't blame her there. Also going back to the Division board lol...

Nancy has got to take care of her first. I understand that. I think all this FOL Hype is probably getting to her if that article is real. I understand where she is coming from, but Nancy should also remember that she brought it on herself. Nancy, you just had to do such a good job on that Hallmark commercial and the producers just haaaad to see it and you just haaad to read for the role of Jo at the age of 13 and just haaad to be so darn good. LOL. It's all her doing.

Nancy is right. Jo is a thing of the past but in reruns she lives on to new generations of people (mainly kids) Nancy should realize that her character has had impact and influence.

Well, last night I looked on www.villagevoice.com, (http://www.villagevoice.com,) and I did not find an article about Nancy McKeon. That isn't to say it's not out there, but it hasn't been done within the last week.

Secondly, many people need to realize that "Jo" is just a character. Some people seem to be a little obsessive about their adoration. That's great to have, but keep in mind that Nancy McKeon has done *countless* other things. So, when she pulls into the McDonald's drive-thru and hears "OH MY LAWD, IT'S JO!!" that would certainly send chills down her spine. It's like everything that she has done since FOL doesn't matter.

I'm not trying to be rude to anyone and I'm not looking to start a fight. I just think that she's entitled to distance herself from the character. It's her choice. If Lisa Whelchel loves that people come up to her and go "BLAIR," that's her own preference. Nancy should be appreciated for her entire body of work, not just a break-through character. If she hadn't worked so hard to establish herself, she could have really ended up like JJ Walker, Gary Coleman or Michael Richards -- all typecast in characters indefinitely.

i understand what she is saying. and i agree with her. i would not want to be know as any thing else but my self. and that is the same thing she is saying. she probably will say the same thing about the division when the show is not on any more. any ways. i dont see any thing wrong with nancy saying she dont want to be known as jo for the rest of her life. i read a different interview she did and she never said any thing disrespectful about fol or any of the people on the show. she said that she does not want to be known as jo for the rest of her life. any ways. i tryed to say this as nicely as i can. any ways i know what she ment. and by the way i did go to the web site and i could not find the artical. so i am going to beleave that you made it up.

I mean, once,when I was 13 or something, I was walking down the hallway at school and my skirt got caught on something and there was a big ripping sound and a gigantic tear in it revealing my undies. I can appreciate that Nancy is advancing in her acting career. I have seen her in other thigs, and yes, she is a fabulous actress. But on a personal level it kind of bothers me that (according to this article) she seems to shrug off the Jo role. There will always be obsessive fans. FOL has a cult following and there's nothing that'll change that. Being an actor comes with a sort of emotional responsibility to the audience, otherwise you'd act for a bunch of cabbages. You know you're going to touch people, and you'll be remembered for that. You have to remember your roots. Heck, if I became the CEO of a multi-billion $ corporation, and someone came up to me and said 'hey! my old Sunday school teacher!', well I'd be delighted.
It's a matter of priorities I guess.

I think it's definetly possible for Nancy to have said something like that (not to imply that she's a terrible person), but it doesn't exactly match the other things she's said, like the people were great, she had fun, etc. If the article is true, I personally think that she should give a lot more credit to her role as Jo because that is what made her famous and that's the main reason why she has such a following.

I dont think every article in a newspaper is put online. That article wasnt even very long. To me that seems like a waste of time to put online so maybe thats why he hasnt provided a link and why no one can find the article online.

I couldn't have said it better myself. I agree. I think someone is just trying to get to people on this board. Like I said my family is from the show me state which is Missouri, I have to be shown before I believe it. I also don't believe half the garbage those rags print Just my opinion and I won't believe it til I hear with my own ears Nancy say it on a talk show or what have you, herself. Just me. I choose to believe what I know is facts.

And here is the facts I know. Nancy is a very talented actresses I am glad that she choose to be an actress to entertain us cause I think it would have been a shame for someone with her talents not to have been on the telelvision screen. She makes you forget about your own problems even if it is just for a little while and she pulls you into the show and makes you want to see more of it. This is just my opinion and I for one am glad that she choose this profession for herself so I can be entertained by such a talented individual. These are my opinions and the reason I enjoy watching everything Nancy has done.

i think we all need to chill. no one can prove that the artical was real or not. i beleave she could have said that, but i dont think she said it in the same way it was posted. and if she did do an interview the person that asked the questions could have added words that she did not say. know i am not saying that he/she did that. but any ways my main point is that no one can prove what happend and did not happen. so we should not get upset over it. and i am sorry for geting upset before. i think this just proves that we should be carefull about the things that we post and the way it could sound to some one else.

Who cares if she said that, I can't say I blame her I wouldn't want to be remembered for one thing I've done in my whole life, it's kinda like growing up and having your family still treat you like a kid even if you are not. Nancy has always been my idol,I never refer to her as Jo she's always been Nancy to me, I've followed her from program to program from movie to movie and I always will, she's not just one character she's a human being. Now if you choose to take what she said as an insult maybe you aren't much of a fan at all. Of course like most of you I'm a bit disappointed that she's not going to be in the reunion but it's not like she's quiting being an actress we will still see her in The Division and hopefully more movies in the future.

Ok, whatever...ummmm I just wanted to express my opinion cause I felt like it, even if no one will read it.IN a way, I admire Nancy for doing what she did, because there are soooo many narrow minded people who will ONLY think of her as JO and not Nancy McKeon!That's awful!That was her character!As far as knowing what she'd say to a newspaper I won't say if she'd say that or not, because I dont' know her personally therefore I have no stinking clue what she would say.I'm willing to bet she never was Jo and she never will be Jo.In another way though, I believe it is absolutely pointless for her to try to shake her image!Like I said a lot of narrow minded people will ALWAYS think of her as Jo and ONLY JO!Soooo...no matter what she does some people will still remember her as JO!Also, from what I hear, Lisa Whelchel had a hard time behind the scenes in FOL, but she isn't trying to get as far away from FOL as possible!AND...she did really good in FOL so if I were her I'd look back and be proud that I did my best and I have a lot of fans and I made friends.I mean, come on!Well, that's my OPINION!
