Passion of Christ Question

Could somebody please tell me if their is any story of the two gentlemen that were nailed to the cross and flanked Jesus!! I am curious since they were meeting the same fate why they would not be as beaten up!!

They were just criminals; they had nothing to do with religion as that was the big deal back during those times.
