View Full Version : Photo Radar-What Do You Think?

There's a rumour floating around that the government here (in Québec) is considering introducing photo radar. Rather than the cops patrolling the freeways looking for speeders, they may use photo radar instead. Does it stop speeders, or is it just a revenue tool for the government?

I know a lot of drivers who aren't too happy with the idea. :(

What do you think about this issue? ;)

It doesn't sound like a good idea to me, but then again, I don't live in Canada.

If they are going to use it they should give drivers a 10 mile an hour buffer, and only send tickets to those going over 10 miles an hour over the speed limit.

I sort of agree on the issue. The problem for me is- how would they (the cops) determine the driver of the car from the actual owner. If a ticket is was issued to the violater, how would they know if the speeder was the actual owner of the car? If your child (who would be old enough to drive for example) drove your car, was issued a speeding ticket, should YOU be the one paying for it- since it's YOUR car?

They wouldn't, but there is always a risk in letting someone else drive ones car. But I suppose if someone else got the ticket, you could get the money from them. If they don't pay up you could sue them.

If the child is a "minor", then the parent would have to pay.

You don't care because YOU don't have a girlfriend. Don't come whining to all of us about your "opinions" about your sex life, Solomon, because nobody really wants to hear about it. ;) And keep your obscene language to yourself, if you decide to reply to my message, or I'll send TJ a Private Message. ;)

I don't appreciate that dumb comment, Soloman. Because I know for a fact that you are extremely rude in EVERY single one of your posts. And you know it-whether you like it or not.

We have photo radar here in Denver and I've actually gotten a ticket for speeding. I don't really think it is that big of a deal but I remember it was somewhat controversial when they first introduced it.

The way it works here, you do have to be going more than 10 mph over the speed limit (I was going 42 in a 30). They mail you the ticket, along with a picture of the driver of the car. You just have to pay the fine, mine was $40. You don't get any points off your license. I personally don't have a problem with it because I know I was speeding so it wasn't unfair that I got a ticket. It's better than being pulled over, getting a ticket that takes points off your license and having to go to traffic court to lower the points and/or fine. If you're obeying the law and not speeding, then you don't have anything to worry about. I believe if there is a discrepancy between the owner and the picture, then you can fight the ticket and they usually just dismiss it. Oh yeah, they are also required to put a sign out that warns you when photo radar is in use. The signs are definitely easy to miss but you can see them if you're paying attention

Intersesting. I know they are debating over freeway or red-light photo radar. Which means that a camera would be placed over an intersection. When a person would run a red-light (or an amber light changing to a red light), than their photo would be snapped. I'm all for that. Because there's too many idiots running red lights here in Montréal. :)

red light cameras are a better idea because a much higher percentage of accidents happen in intersections, so they do a lot more to prevent accidents.

They have photo radar in British Columbia? Doesn't sound like a fair system. I guess if a system was set up like you would see in Colorado, it would make sense. I would prefer red-light photo radar here. Too many people ignore them here.
