View Full Version : Direct TV or Dish Network?

Those people with satellites, what do you think of Direct TV or Dish Network? I would like opinions from both sides. Our cable sucks and a satellite is much cheaper, much more reliable, and has a lot more channels than cable.
Thanks!

I can't add much more except that I agree 100%.
I love DirecTV. Glad I have it and couldn't imagine having cable again, lol. I've had DirecTV for about 3 years now and not a complaint.

Does anyone have their high-speed internet access "DirecWAY?" That's really what is leading me towards Direct TV. Our cable and internet go out sometimes for no reason(it'll be a perfect weather day too). It's SO annoying.

I have neither. Time Warner Digital Cable rocks (at least here in San Diego). I have all the great channels plus it has a digital recorder which is like Tivo but is tons better. Unlike Tivo, it can record two programs at once and it doesn't skip or anything. My family is very happy with it.

I have Dish Network and I think it's great. Awesome picture, only goes out when it rains heavily, and the menus are easy to navigate.
My aunt had Direct TV and said it sucked. The picture was always going out, it wasn't as clear as it should have been, and the customer service people left a little to be desired.

I have Dish Network and I like it. It's easy to use, cheaper than Charter, they send us free pay-per-view tickets, they give us lots of free movie weekends, and there's even a dish interactive channel where you can read the news, or your horiscope, or even play video games. There just recently added Bingo to channel 104 and you can win prizes.

Charter is what I have now. Worst service I have EVER seen. Cable One was better than this. At least it didn't go out unless the weather was REALLY bad.

I have Dish Network, I love it as well. The prices, quality, and even the costumer service is great! LOL... and they offer us free pay-per-view and HBO/Cinemax all the time! :D

Do you have one of those digital cable boxes or whatever they are? I think those things are difficult to use! When they switched from regular cable over to the digital, they didn't know what they were doing and half the people in my town didn't have TV. There's a lot of elderly people in my town and they still haven't figured out how to use their cable box and the Charter people never helped them.

I don't have digital cable, I have just plain old cable. They do offer digital cable, but the price is much higher, and we decided to not go that way. The price for regular cable is low, we get 77 channels for $30 a month but it's unreliable. There's no guarantee it'll be working at anytime. What sucks worse is that because I have cable internet, when the cable goes out, so does the internet.
Oh and Charter's customer service is even worse. When it does go out, I always call them soon after it goes out and all I get is "it'll be back on when it comes back on"

My family had Tivo twice. The first time we bought it and it worked with our digital cable. Then after some months, it kept messing up. By messing up I mean stopping involuntarily and going slow and stuff. We sent it to get fixed, got it weeks later and before too long it did it again. That's when we decided to get the new digital recorder thing from Time Warner Digital Cable. We've had it since December.

Most cable systems are a ripoff now. We used to pay $50 for 60 channels. That's ABSURD. We're paying $30 right now for 78 channels. Now you can get 130 channels for under $40 with Satellite. Now tell me, which is the better deal?

The new recorder? It's better, at least for my family's downstairs family room TV. With Tivo you can't record two programs or record one show and watch another one simultaneously. With the new digital recorder you can record up to two at the same time, but the downside is that you can't change to another channel until at least one of the recordings is finished. Another thing with Tivo was that you aren't able to watch a show and set the recordings and stuff at the same time. With the new recorder, I can do both albeit with the screen split. It's better. I don't know if any other cable companies offer this thing but if you can afford it, snap it up.

Top 150. We used to have 100, but upgraded to get...I dunno, Speed Channel or something.
We also get HBO and Cinemax and the Superstations package, allowing us to watch KTLA, WSBK, WPIX, WWOR and another one I can't think of. I love watching the news from LA in Iowa.

Yeah... we live in an area where we aren't in a market they provide for local channels(it's a small, puny market) I would rather watch NYC or LA anyday.
It's 180 now. They recently went from 50-100-150 to 60-120-180.

Actually, that's only true if you only have one modem. The TV in my room only has one, but the one downstairs has two so you can record something and watch something different. I think you can get up to four modems.

That's your opinion, but if you had my **** cable company you would feel differently. Some cable systems I'm sure are great, but not mine!
I had satellite for one year. Dish Network. They were great, but, if you're an NFL fan, you *need* to get DirecTV (I learned that the hard way in September)
I had America's Top 180 (Ex-150), Superstations, Nashville Locals, and NYC/Atlanta Distants (I live in one of the few "Gray Areas" where you can get BOTH locals AND distants). Great stuff. And, I just so happened to have the N@N West feed during their attempt to air some decent things (PS/HotC), thought late at night. Since they aired starting at 4 AM ET on the East feed, that meant that they started at *7 AM* ET. Plus, having WoF at 5 PM instead of 7:30 PM was great.
This isn't to say that the local cable is bad, just that satellite IS better (The only reason I'm on cable now is due to ls specific clause in the lease that bars fixing anything to the house...and since you pretty much have to fix the dish to the house to keep it up for more than a week...). Of course, my cable company has gotten on the ball in the last 3 months (literally RIGHT before we switched back), and added, again, in the span of 3 months (granted, some of these SHOULD have been added years ago):
Lifetime Movie Network, FitTV, E!, CourtTV, National Geographic, Telemundo, Goodlife, Nicktoons TV, PAX (Re-add), Fuse, Nick GAS, Noggin/The N, ShopNBC, RFD-TV (One of the Dish public interest channels), Wisdom, Trio, style, Fox Movie Channel, Discovery Wings, Discovery Times, Discovery Home & Leisure, History International, Biography, TechTV, G4, VH1 Classic, MTV2, MTV Hits and BET Jazz.
If they'd just add ESPN Classic, I'd be set. Oh, and I forgot to mention the local access channel...which I basically wind up running half the time (We have an entire media class that's SUPPOSED to run it, but, most of the work falls to me...Let alone the fact that I'm the only one who knows how to use 99% of the things in the room..Anyway...) They also've started to swap out some of the TV feeds with the HD feeds (Though, half the time, the pic is still in SD)

Does the NFL ticket come with the DirecTV Total choice package? Or is it extra? I really like the idea of it on DirecTV because I get so annoyed sometimes when my local station doesn't carry a game I want to watch.

Does Dish Network or DirecTV ever go out? I have heard a few DirecTV subscribers on another board say it does go out when it rains hard, while Dish doesn't. I see pros and cons for both and I think either one is a heck of a lot better than cable.

The only time mine has ever gone out is right before or during a real heavy rain storm. And it has to pour. It won't go out through some tiny light rain. So basically up here, that's only the summer months.

Well, see, switching back to cable might have cost me digital feeds of several channels, and 1 or two altogether, but, at the same time, I did get a few I *didn't* have on Dish (Goodlife, Trio [Dave & Laugh In], and G4 [Starcade!!]

Dish goes out if there's heavy rain or heavy cloud cover. The Charter cable used to go out all of the time and it always went off right when there was a show coming on that I wanted to watch! I do like my dish, but I must say that the guy who put it in didn't do a very good job. He was in a hurry and the way he attached the cable to the power pole there's always water getting down in the cable and messing it up. He had to put the dish at the top of our power pole b/c it had to be high enough to get a signal over the trees. There's a connector connecting the cable from the dish to the house and water gets in it, messes it up, then a warning appears on the TV that it can't get a signal so there's no picture. It also says something about checking your multi-dish switch  This has happened twice! Fist time we had a guy come fix it, all he did was cut off the bad part of the cable and charged us 40 bucks that I can't afford!!!! It happened again just last week and I fixed it myself for free. He should have fixed it right the first time so water couldn't get in it!

We have Charter cable and internet here, and my problem is, when the cable goes out, so does the internet. I could survive if just the internet went out, but when both go out, it sucks. It went out one day last week about 12pm and was off for about an hour and the weather was clear as can be. That wasn't the first time it had done that.

Directv's DVR with Tivo allows you to record 2 shows at the same time, and is 1000% better than the DVR that Time Warner has.
